Internet Safety

OverviewThe Internet contains a vast array of valuable tools, and the majority of people who go online have positive, beneficial experiences. However, there are dangers that exist in the online environment. Both parents and children need to be aware of possible risks in using the internet and how to minimize them.
What are the risks?
Some risks of the internet include:
  • Exposure to inappropriate material
  • Possible physical molestation
  • Harassment
  • Legal and financial exploitation
Teenagers are particularly at risk because they often use the computer unsupervised and are more likely than younger children to participate in online discussions regarding companionship, relationships, or sexual activity. If you have a teen in your family or you are a teenager, check out Teen Safety on the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children website.
