training 1In Service Training
The Elmhurst Police Department regularly hold In Service Training Dates in Spring, Summer, and Fall that are department wide training to cover important legal updates as well as response to emergencies and crisis.

Tactical Patrol Officer Training
Officers on each shift are trained monthly by the Tactical Patrol Officer program learning important skill to make dynamic, responsible, and effective decisions for crimes in progress.

Monthly Range Trainings
The Elmhurst Police Department has it’s own inside handgun range.  Officers shoot every month using their firearms and at least twice a year utilizing their rifles at an outdoor range.

Training 2NEMRT – Conferences – Advanced Training
Elmhurst Police Officers receive a minimum of 50 hours of training per calendar year and most officers exceed over 100 hours of training in most calendar years.  Elmhurst Police Officers regularly attend both department led training as well as state and regional training.

State Mandated Training
The Elmhurst Police Department proudly exceeds state required standards for law enforcement officer training.  All active, sworn members participated in training to fulfill mandates set forth by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training Standards Board. Last year, the ILETSB updated training mandates for all Law Enforcement officers in Illinois; new mandates were broken down into annual, 3-year and 5-year training requirements that went into effect in July of 2022. The Elmhurst Police Department created a 5-year training plan to meet all of the required mandates on a range of topics including: Training 4Law Updates, Use of Force, Civil Rights, Constitutional & Proper Use of Law Enforcement Authority, Cultural Competency, Human Rights, Procedural Justice, Mental Health Awareness and Trauma Informed Response to Sexual Assault. Elmhurst Police Investigators additionally maintain certification in Sexual Assault/Abuse Investigations and Lead Homicide Investigation. Officers also completed monthly trainings online through the Police Law Institute, which offers training certified through the ILETSB on topics including:

  • Use of Force; Deadly Force; Legal Standards
  • Drone Law and Use in Law Enforcement
  • Hate Crime Law, Investigation and Enforcement
  • Landlord-Tenant Law and Dispute Resolution
  • Body Cameras
  • 2022 U.S. Supreme Court Decisions
  • Psychology of Domestic Violence
  • Racial Profiling, Implicit Bias, and Cultural Competency
  • Law Enforcement Officer Mental Wellness
